Anne Merkley
Artists Biography

Pocatello, Idaho

I began to draw at age two, to photograph at ten, and to paint at twelve.  I took my first college figure drawing course and placed first with a self-portrait in an Art Instruction national competition while still in high school.  I also won Sweepstakes and Spectator’s Choice with a painting of a blacksmith shop at the Eastern Idaho State Fair at age 17.

I went on to earn Bachelors and Masters of Fine Art Degrees from Idaho State University, Pocatello.  I am fascinated with abstract qualities in realism, and reality in the abstract.  Thus I work in both genres.  And I have a romance with light; there would be no color or form in its absence.

I have taught drawing, portrait and figure drawing and painting classes in the Art Department and through the Craft Shop and Continuing Education, ISU.  Currently I am teaching at the Pocatello Art Center and giving lessons in my home.

Many of my drawings and paintings and several bronze sculptures can be found in private collections, while abstract photo collages hang in the local Federal Building.  I’ve had one woman-shows in Pocatello at the International Arts Gallery and numerous downtown locations.  In 2002 my black and white photo collages hung in the ISU Library and Mocha Madness.

Among the pieces I’ve had in national juried shows are a pastel figure drawing, charcoal still life, and color photo collages.
